Studies Office plants have become more
popular over the last 30 years, with research reinforcing the belief that they improve the
atmosphere, reduce stress and sharpen concentration.
In recent studies, plants have been shown to relieve stress,
reduce absenteeism and increase overall productivity. And, we all know that you can't have
a happy customer if your employees are all cranky! A test by professor Virginia Lohr of
Washington State University resulted in people with a plant on their desk showing a 12%
faster reaction time and reduced levels of stress.
A two-year study conducted by the Agricultural University in
Oslo found the following reductions in sickness once plants were introduced in an office
setting: |
| Ailment |
% Reduction |
| Fatigue |
20 |
| Headache |
45 |
| Sore Throat |
30 |
| Cough |
40 |
| Dry Skin |
25 |
Some of the studies go on to suggest that
each person in an office has what they refer to as a "Personal Breathing Zone"
of 6 to 8 cubic feet, and within which, there should be a plant to help encourage these
benefits.
